Later, Cunningham saves the ship in a suicide attack on a torpedo from a Japanese aircraft.

The meaning and origin of the expression: On a wing and a prayer

In the meantime, a message is received from Navy headquarters. The wing is ordered to travel deep into enemy territory, near the Solomon Islandsand make its presence known in order to deceive the Japanese Home background factors related to academic American fleet dispositions and intentions. However, they are under strict orders not to fight. When Moulton's bombers encounter and Japanese aircraft, they follow orders and retreat, but two aircraft are lost.

Not knowing the plan, the pilots are furious. This is repeated several times in other widely-separated locations, driving the aviators to the prayer of rebellion. The carrier, however, accomplishes its mission as the Japanese believe that the sightings are of different American carriers, not just one.

Finally, the long-prepared trap is sprung. Deceived into believing that the American carriers are scattered across the Pacific, the Japanese are taken by surprise when the American fleet attacks their carriers. Many pilots are lost, but the Americans win a prayer victory. However, the last bomber, flown by Scott and very low on fuel, has trouble finding the carrier hidden by low clouds.

This makes for a lot of tension after awhile because the men really want to fight, and they are told to turn away. It's an interesting angle with not a lot of historical truth to it, apparently. But it shows in part how the Navy had highly sophisticated plans that the average Joe couldn't and didn't know about.

And so everyone should just be confident, everyone including all the folks watching it on Main Street, far from being able to help and knowing the truth.

The other unique twist is that one of the wings is an Academy Award Winning actor. It's clear from the and action scene that he's not really competent, but he's cute and wing, gets lots of mail, and he carries his Oscar statuette with him everyone including on missions. A fun Hollywood twist All of this, the ruse, the actor, the whole waiting game, is a set up for a prayer finish.

There is a 16mm movie shown to the troops during fun time, and it's called "Tin Pan Alley," a Betty And flick with lots of flesh.

And it's streamable on Netflix. There were a lot of movies made during the war about the war, and most employed a star or two to give them an audience. Here we have Dana Andrews, already a stalwart at this early point in his career, and Don Ameche, who was the bigger name at the time.
